                               Forgiveness

Psalm 51: 1-13

1) Written by King David when the prophet Nathan had approached him with a word of knowledge about his adultery with Bathsheba- 2Samuel 11-12

1John 1: 9.   Here is God's promise to us. Why then do we struggle to believe and accept Gods Forgiveness.

David realises the seriousness of his actions. V3. But he seems to want a deep transformation v10-13.

2)Read Psalm 40 together

Qu. How does David describe the despair of sin v2,12,17

Qu? What are the results of forgiveness v3,6-10

Qu? What does God do when he forgives us?

Isaiah 6:6-7

Isaiah 43:25

Philippians 3:9

3) Does forgiveness mean no consequences .

2 Samuel 12:13-14

Hebrews 12:10-11

Satan likes to remind us of past sin and how easily we fall into temptation. We need to remind ourselves and Satan of scripture: Isaiah 6:6-7. And 43:25.

Before the throne of God above has the verse.

When Satan tempts me to despair

And tells me of the guilt within,

Upward I look and see Him there

Who made an end of all my sin .

Because the sinless Saviour died

My sinful soul is counted free.

For God the just is satisfied

To look on Him and pardon me.

Micah 7:19: He hurls our sins overboard.

How should we deal with lingering feelings of guilt?

Corrie Ten Boon used to say, “No fishing allowed” . She knew that we tend to drag up our old sins, that we can live under a perpetual vague sense of guilt.

But Christ has forgiven us to the uttermost.

Practical suggestions:

Reflect frequently on the cost of our salvation. Romans 3:23-26.

23 for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, 24 and are justified by his grace as a gift, through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus, 25 whom God put forward as a propitiation by his blood, to be received by faith. This was to show God's righteousness, because in his divine forbearance he had passed over former sins. 26 It was to show his righteousness at the present time, so that he might be just and the justifier of the one who has faith in Jesus.

Ask for the Holy Spirit's help.

Psalm 51:11;

Avoid tempting situations and people.

2Timothy2:22

22 Flee the evil desires of youth and pursue righteousness, faith, love and peace, along with those who call on the Lord out of a pure heart.

Put clean clothes on.

Colossians3:1-14;

Living as Those Made Alive in Christ

3 Since, then, you have been raised with Christ, set your hearts on things above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God. 2 Set your minds on things above, not on earthly things. 3 For you died, and your life is now hidden with Christ in God. 4 When Christ, who is your[a] life, appears, then you also will appear with him in glory.

5 Put to death, therefore, whatever belongs to your earthly nature: sexual immorality, impurity, lust, evil desires and greed, which is idolatry. 6 Because of these, the wrath of God is coming.[b] 7 You used to walk in these ways, in the life you once lived. 8 But now you must also rid yourselves of all such things as these: anger, rage, malice, slander, and filthy language from your lips. 9 Do not lie to each other, since you have taken off your old self with its practices 10 and have put on the new self, which is being renewed in knowledge in the image of its Creator. 11 Here there is no Gentile or Jew, circumcised or uncircumcised, barbarian, Scythian, slave or free, but Christ is all, and is in all.

12 Therefore, as God’s chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience. 13 Bear with each other and forgive one another if any of you has a grievance against someone. Forgive as the Lord forgave you. 14 And over all these virtues put on love, which binds them all together in perfect unity.
