Opening Prayers

Reading.      Ephesians 1:3-1.      New International Version

Praise for Spiritual Blessings in Christ

3 Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us in the heavenly realms with every spiritual blessing in Christ. 4 For he chose us in him before the creation of the world to be holy and blameless in his sight. In love5 he[a] predestined us for adoption to sonship[b] through Jesus Christ, in accordance with his pleasure and will— 6 to the praise of his glorious grace, which he has freely given us in the One he loves. 7 In him we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of sins, in accordance with the riches of God’s grace 8 that he lavished on us. With all wisdom and understanding, 9 he[c] made known to us the mystery of his will according to his good pleasure, which he purposed in Christ,10 to be put into effect when the times reach their fulfillment—to bring unity to all things in heaven and on earth under Christ.

11 In him we were also chosen,[d] having been predestined according to the plan of him who works out everything in conformity with the purpose of his will, 12 in order that we, who were the first to put our hope in Christ, might be for the praise of his glory. 13 And you also were included in Christ when you heard the message of truth, the gospel of your salvation. When you believed, you were marked in him with a seal, the promised Holy Spirit, 14 who is a deposit guaranteeing our inheritance until the redemption of those who are God’s possession—to the praise of his glory.

Reflection :

In his letter to the Ephesian Church, St Paul spoke about their new identity as Christians. In doing so he introduced this strange concept of the heavenly realm; a place of spiritual interaction. So what do we know about the heavenly realm.

A) It is where Jesus is - at the right hand side of God the Father

Ephesians 1:20

God’s power is the same as the mighty strength he exerted when he raised Christ from the dead and seated him at his right hand in the heavenly realms,

B) Although physically we are sat here in Canvey Methodist Church, spiritually when Jesus is in our lives, the heavenly realms are where we are in that spiritual sphere.

Ephesians 2:6

And God raised us up with Christ and seated us with him in the heavenly realms in Christ Jesus,

C) It is a place where spiritual battles are fought and won in Christ and on our behalf.

Ephesians 6:12

For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms.

D) It is a place of spiritual blessing.

Ephesians 1:3

Praise for Spiritual Blessings in Christ. Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us in the heavenly realms with every spiritual blessing in Christ.

E) It is the place where the church, collectively witnesses to earthly authorities

Ephesians 3:10

His intent was that now, through the church, the manifold wisdom of God should be made known to the rulers and authorities in the heavenly realms.

Wow. But in these verses from Ephesians 1 we also learn more about our identity as Christians.

A) We are chosen- Even before we were born, God intended  us to be holy and blameless in his sight.

B). Right at the very beginning we were loved and meant to be a part of his wider family.! (To be adopted with all the rights of sons, irrespective of our gender)

C) Our lives were designed to praise God in his glorious and freely given grace

D) And lastly, just in case we are in any doubt God has sealed his promise by giving us his Holy Spirit within.

(When you believed, says St. Paul, you were marked in him with a seal, the promised Holy Spirit, 14 who is a deposit guaranteeing our inheritance until the redemption of those who are God’s possession—to the praise of his glory).

As we celebrate The love of God together in Communion, we do so as his children, his family, knowing that His Holy spirit draws us together seated both here and in heavenly places.

Amen
