Wives Club - 60th Anniversary Celebrations

The Canvey Island Methodist Wives Club recently 60th Anniversary Banner made by Wives Club member Barbara Westropcelebrated its 60th anniversary at two events.  On Thursday afternoon, 3rd March, their guest speaker was Rev Brenda Gutberlet, a former minister of the church.  The Canvey Community Choir attended and the meeting was followed by tea and anniversary cake baked and decorated by members.  On Sunday, 6th March Mr Colin Turner led the service at which a banner made by a Wives Club member was dedicated.  The service included a slide show of events from the club's history and was followed once again by tea and anniversary cake.

The Wives Club meets weekly at Canvey Methodist Church on Waarden Road.  The club is an example of ecumenism because membership is open to all women who are members of any church or of no church.  Their meetings include quizzes, talks on a wide variety of topics, musical entertainment, coach outings, lunches, tea afternoons and devotionals.

Over its 60 year history the club has supported many good causes including the Lady McAdden BUST unit, Fair Havens and Little Havens Hospices, Essex Air Ambulance, Action for Children, Christian Hope International (formerly Containers of Hope), Cancer Research, Peaceful Place and Motor Neurone Disease among others and has entered floats in Canvey carnival.

Prospective members are welcome Thursdays at 2 p.m.
